Truffle Farming in Ontario and a Tick Invasion | Harrowsmith Radio | Episode 4

Over the years that idea morphed into something even more fantastic, growing truffles from the roots of hazelnut and oak trees in Ontario.

Adam Koziol of Earthgen International used to be an ad man in Toronto. Then he and a friend got a crazy idea of growing mahogany trees with superpowers roots in the Caribbean. Over the years that idea morphed into something even more fantastic, growing truffles from the roots of hazelnut and oak trees in Ontario. Working with Spanish scientists Adam has inoculated young trees with the stuff that truffles are made from. Heโ€™s sold those trees to over thirty growers in Ontario who now are counting down the years to a possible truffle windfall. I visited Adam on his farm, and the headquarters for Earthgen International, near Dunville, Ontario to talk about his fantastic fungus factory. Vanessa Farnsworth had her life laid low by Lyme disease, so she knows its toll on health, happiness and relationships. She also knows how ticks have been moving into Canada as unwanted invaders. She wrote about that in the Spring issue of Harrowsmith Magazine. I chatted with her about ticks and the complicated role climate change might play in their spread. By the way, the music in the podcast? Itโ€™s by good olโ€™ Canadian singer, composer and friend of the โ€˜cast, David Archibald. โ€” About The Music โ€” โ€œWhite Riverโ€ David Archibald https://www.davidarchibald.comโ€‹ โ€” About Harrowsmith Magazine โ€” More than 40 years ago, in 1976, James Lawrence pasted together the first edition of Harrowsmith magazine on his kitchen table in rural Ontario. Totally unique, it was the first Canadian magazine to focus on organic living, alternative energy sources, and a country lifestyle. Lawrenceโ€™s ode to back-to- the-land virtues quickly attracted legions of fans and soon became Canadaโ€™s bible for rural living. Over the years, Harrowsmith has had a few incarnations (including Harrowsmith Country Life and Gardening Digest). After a brief hiatus, it returned bigger and better than ever, published by Moongate Publishing Inc. Through it all, our loyal fans have been there with us. The new Harrowsmith takes the same aesthetic that inspired Lawrenceโ€”the thirst for knowledge and inspiration about all things rural, organic and greenโ€”and brings it into the twenty-first century with videos, podcasts, digital editions and beautiful full-sized print magazines. Todayโ€™s Harrowsmith is still eagerly consumed around farmhouse tablesโ€”as well as dockside on Muskoka chairs, on condo balconies, and at downtown coffee shops. We are proud to continue the spirit of the original publication and its vision of providing a purely Canadian take on country living, the environment, and the sharing of useful information for country dwellersโ€”as well as city folk and anyone seeking to tread a little more lightly upon the earth. โ€” More Harrowsmith โ€” https://www.harrowsmithmag.comโ€‹ https://www.twitter.com/harrowsmithmagโ€‹ https://www.pinterest.ca/harrowsmithmagโ€‹ https://www.instagram.com/harrowsmithmagโ€‹ https://www.facebook.com/harrowsmithmโ€ฆโ€‹ #harrowsmithmagazineโ€‹ #magazineโ€‹ #podcast
