Feather Your Nest – Upcycling Your old jeans

This upcycling project is a beautiful way to give a new purpose to old jeans.

This upcycling project is a beautiful way to give a new purpose to old jeans.

We saw denim feathers at a craft show, and that inspired us to make a bunch of our own to use as tassel ornaments. Now that we’ve made them too, we’re seeing them everywhere.

To make them, we cut out feather shapes the size we wanted and then, using fabric glue, we attached a seem
of the jean in the middle of the cutout (you could use a sewing machine too, but we don’t have one). The feathers started to look more feathery when we started to fray the edges by pulling out the threads. The fun discovery in this project is that jeans are made of different coloured threads, so if you pull out the dark threads, you will get light feathers and vice versa.

We glued on a bit of string and a wooden bead to the end, and the feathers were done. Next, we’re going to try making them with plaid shirts to use in our Christmas garlands.

It takes about 30 minutes or so to make each one.
