Sara Frances Designs is a boutique woodworking company focused on producing high-quality, handmade birdhouses and bespoke pet decor.
Harrowsmith sat down with founder Scott Holland to learn more about why he became an architect to the animals.
Q: Tell our readers a little bit about Sara Frances Designs?
A: Named affectionately after our daughter, Sara Frances, my wife, Shirley, and I started the company to provide our animal friends with elegance and practicality. We started with birdhouses. We wanted them to
blend the right mix of sophistication, refinement and quality to provide a look that is equally stylish in the garden or inside the home as a conversation piece in a sunroom or on a mantel. Our line of products now includes cat homes and pet accessories.
Q: Does sustainability play a role in your business?
A: Yes! We are dedicated to social responsibility. We use 100 per cent sustainable western red cedar, we never use vinyl or plastic and the inside of the houses are left natural for the birds.
Q: Your designs are so original. Where do you get your ideas for your houses?
A: We get our inspiration from nature as well as various regional and international architecture. We hope our designs encourage people to escape with their thoughts of past travels or those destinations yet to be discovered.
Q: Is there anything else that makes your birdhouses special?
A: In addition to using the finest material available, all our houses are built with air vents to allow air flow throughout the nesting box, drain holes in the floor to maintain a dry environment inside the nesting box and a stainless-steel hinged access gate to allow for easy annual cleanout.
