Coming to you from the East Coast!

Out May 26, the Summer issue of Harrowsmith arrives, taking readers across the glorious East Coast of Canada.

Each issue this year focuses on a different part of our great country, from the North in our Spring issue to Canada’s West Coast in our upcoming Winter issue, and there’s no better time to explore the East than in our favourite season of the year.

The adventure begins with a Q&A with musician Lisa MacIsaac, one half of Madison Violet and sister of award-winning fiddler Ashley, who walks us through her hometown of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.

Harrowsmith’s Gardening Editors Mark and Ben Cullen then give us a tour of an Anne of Green Gables garden, inspired by the popular stories of Lucy Maud Montgomery and Prince Edward Island landscapes that inspired her.

Mark and Ben also show readers how to grow and harvest root vegetables, while Zach Loeks explores the possibilities of growing edible diversity in microclimates.

This issue, we talk to lavender growers across the country about the joys and pitfalls of growing lavender, particularly during a pandemic, and Sarah Loten explores the livestock breeds that have evolved over Canada’s history.

Those inspired to build their own root cellar can follow Home and Farm Editor Steve Maxwell’s step by step guide. He also breaks down lawn mower maintenance basics.

As always, in the issue you’ll find more great ideas for the home, garden and beyond, including:

  • Classic East Coast flavours with a twist, including Salt Fish Cakes, Blueberry Grunt and Tomato Chow recipes
  • A road trip itinerary to take you through the East Coast’s top stops and attractions
  • Robert Dick gives us a closer look at the stars and shares how time truly is relative
  • East Coast book picks and Things We Love
  • Dan Needles’ hilarious musings on life in the country
  • Plus so much more!

“After a year of lockdowns, we could all use a vacation, and what better place to travel to and celebrate than Canada’s East Coast,” says Harrowsmith publisher Yolanda Thornton. “Whether you bookmark the pages for a future staycation holiday, or simply enjoy the stories from the comforts of your own home, there are plenty of tips and ideas this issue to keep a smile on your face all season long. As a 100% “Made in Canada” magazine, it’s an honour and a pleasure to bring the East Coast to homes across the country.”
